How the UK Economy Affects Jobseekers and Recruiters We all know that the British economy is going through something of a troubled time right now. Unemployment is on the rise, growth prospects are shaky and youth unemployment is a particular concern, with more than 1 million youngsters currently classed as âNEETâ (not in education, employment or training). This is a cause for concern, particularly as a recent survey from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) found that 31% of private sector firms plan to make cuts to jobs during the current quarter. This is likely to result in the unemployment queues swelling further and, when you add in the public sector redundancies that are currently taking place too, it all adds up to a difficult picture. But how does this affect job seekers? In many ways, it is easy to see how they are affected by redundancies due to business cut backs and slow industry growth. There are more people chasing after the jobs that are out there, meaning that competition can be fierce, particularly for the very best jobs or in very competitive industries. Another worry is the north-south divide: the CIPD study found that job prospects in the south are much better than they are in the north. We also have to take into account issues such as London School of Economics suggests that the fees increase could result in 7.5% fewer men going to university and 5% fewer women. This all has an impact on the jobs market, adding to the number of young people looking for jobs. When you consider that there are also more graduates than ever before chasing after jobs, it puts even more pressure on the system. There are other options for them to consider, such as apprenticeships, but we have yet to see whether the challenge will be met. There are also recruitment challenges involved in all of this: some recruiters are finding it harder to get work themselves as businesses look to cut costs and take recruitment processes back in house. Others are overwhelmed with candidates for vacancies, which in some ways can be seen as a positive thing as it provides more choice, but it can also make it harder to place increasing numbers of unemployed people in jobs. Overall, even though there are still some excellent employment and training opportunities out there, it seems as though the challenging conditions for job seekers and recruiters alike are set to continue for some time yet. Not all of us visiting the country are actually aware of how much the said tax is, but for us to understand VAT in the country, we need to spend some time, at least, doing research about it. That being said, reclaiming VAT might somehow make the topic more interesting. To start up, the countryâs VAT is around 20%, but the government can eventually adjust it into something lower or higher at times. Childrenâs stuff, for example, is not exempted with VAT; kidsâ car seats have a 5% reduced tax rate. However, some goods like childrenâs clothing do not have VAT. Whatâs more confusing about this is that several goods in the UK at the moment do not have VAT, but these may have in other EU countries. Despite all that, the question of how much VAT you paid is still intriguing. How to calculate VAT on purchased goods The UKâs law states that if you buy goods from retail stores or catalogues, the declared price has already included the VAT amount, and no additional tax will be charged to you. But how do you basically do the math? Because 20%, or 5% at some special types of goods, is already included in the retail price, the calculation is simple. You will only need to multiply the price by 0.1666, and thatâs the tax amount. But itâs still easier to think of reclaiming VAT than solving math problems right? An example calculation is when you purchased something for £120; VAT on the price is £20, which means you are buying an item worth £100 only. The VAT amount of £20 is 20% of £100 but only 16.6% of £120. So if you see the VAT value on the receipt of some expensive items you bought, that is just to inform you; it does not mean an extra charge. How reclaiming VAT is done Although the topic about VAT is complex and complicated, one interesting area about it is its refund. Usually, the simpler and easier ways of getting reclaims are on the affordable items. So you need to remember the following steps to claim your VAT refund. The first thing you need to take note is finding stores with the VAT Refund Scheme. Itâs not mandatory to have this in stores, but there are several ones in the UK that have this, which are famous with foreign tourists. When you pay goods in these stores, the store owners or personnel will give you the VAT 407 form to fill out. You would need to present proof that you are eligible for the reclaim though; usually, passports are good. The store personnel or owners will also explain about the refund, and you need to understand all its terms and conditions. When you leave the UK, you need to show the customs officials the documents you have about the refund for them to approve it. Once approved, they will inform the store owners who will process the refund. Reclaiming VAT in the UK goes with a process just like others. So before you make arrangements with your visit to the country, you should know your rights on VAT refunds to make things a lot easier for you.

Donât be caught unawares with a career document that hasnât been touched in five years. You should update your résumé every six months. If it isnât relevant to you, how can you expect an employer to take it seriously either? 2) Showcase your accomplishments in your résumé. Employers care about what you accomplished at each company where you worked so they can make a decision of what you might be able to do for them. Dumping in your job duties with a quick cut and paste is actually doing yourself a disservice. Why wouldnât you want to showcase your value by showing what you did, how you did it, and what the end result positively impacted the employer? 3) Build your network. The power of your Rolodex (or these days, your LinkedIn contact base) could be the source of your next job. Or, they can be an important support group if you get laid off. The point is that you need to actively cultivate your friends, professional colleagues, and people that you meet and treat them as valued connections. DONâT be a âuserâ â" only contacting a person once, using them, and then throwing them away. No one ever wants to be used by someone else. 4) Identify your next career targets, and move towards them. Where do you want to go? Is it an easy next step, or are there some obstacles between where you are now and where you want to go? Someone once said, âSuccess means knowing where the hockey puck is going to be.â If you can see your next career destination on the horizon, then chart your professional course in that direction. Figure out who you need to know, what skills you need, and what other things you might need to make a landing on your new career beachhead. 5) Build your knowledge base. Do everything you can to increase your knowledge and understanding of a specific field. Becoming a subject matter expert can help catapult you into the arena as a top industry talent, and become a highly sought-after commodity. Any employer hiring right now is looking for the best value for the position that they are going to fill. If you offer cutting edge expertise, youâve just upped your hiring quotient significantly. 6) Demonstrate your leadership. By volunteering and being a member of the right industry organizations will establish your professionalism. Silence - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Ive been spending the last 4 days at a yoga retreat arranged by the Art of Living. Were talking four days of getting up REALLY early, meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, talks and various other exercises. And the most interesting thing was that two of those days were spent in silence. No talking, reading, music, TV, emails, phones or communicating of any kind.
